Tiger Woods understands that he is competitively rusty when compared to the great majority of this week's PGA Championship competitors. That does not imply he has lower expectations of himself.
Woods shot 1-over 72 to start the 106th PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, on a mixed bag of a morning. He struggled through a series of errant tee shots to stay around par for the bulk of his first round at Valhalla Golf Club, then caught fire midway through his second nine to break into red digits. Woods, on the other hand, finished with back-to-back three-putt bogeys that will leave him with a bad taste in his mouth all night. He's 10 strokes behind Xander Schauffele, who opened the tournament with a 9-under 62, the lowest single-round total in PGA Championship history.
The day was similar to his first round at the Masters last month (1-over 73), with an up-and-down pace but a finish that should fall near the predicted cut line. Woods responded with a second-round 72 at the Masters to make the cut, setting a tournament record with his the 24th consecutive cut. He'll seek to play the weekend for his second major championship, aiming for a speedier start than he did Thursday (when he was fortunate to escape his first three holes in only one over par before settling into a rhythm).
