Dearborn County Sheriff Shane McHenry said in a statement Thursday that deputies arrived at the site at 4 p.m., near the intersection of Harrison Brookville Road and Johnson Fork Road. They discovered two highly damaged automobiles, as well as Nelson's car, which was 100 yards distant and on fire.
The drivers of the other two automobiles, Ethan Grubbs, 18, and Tab Prater, 65, were rescued from their vehicles by firefighters. They were brought to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Nelson died at the site.
According to McHenry, the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office and Indiana State Police conducted a preliminary investigation and discovered Nelson was heading east on Harrison Brookville Road at excessive speed. According to the report, she drove left of center, colliding with Grubb's vehicle and Prater's automobile before toppling and setting fire.
