Police fatally shoot suspect who charged at officers with hatchet in Crookston

 The guy "rapidly approached" the officers, who employed less-lethal tactics to settle the situation, according to the Crookston police chief.



CROOKSTON — Police shot a man holding a hatchet as he came at them early Thursday.

Crookston Police Chief Darin Selzler said the guy, whose identity has not been revealed, was taken to RiverView Health Hospital in town and ultimately died.

Officers found the man on E. 7th Street at 12:55 a.m. brandishing a hatchet. The man "rapidly approached" police, who employed less-lethal methods to resolve the issue, according to the chief.

The cops shot the guy as he advanced toward them, according to the chief.

According to Selzler, officers provided help to the individual on scene.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension acknowledged it was investigating a "use of force" incident in the northwestern Minnesota city.
